I have been hearing this a lot lately...

Google search is now becoming the first brand experience (maybe contact is a better word) many consumers are having with new and old brands.

Your home page is no longer your website's home page. It's now the Google results page, which may include a link to your site. -- Something John Battelle communicated in a presentation I saw last week.
